Aistear

Aistear

Last year we carried out a SSE (School Self Evaluation) in Literacy (the teaching of English) at Kilruane N.S. Following our SSE, we introduced Jolly Phonics and Aistear in the Infant Classes and also in First Class.

For those of you who are not familiar with Aistear –  Aistear is the name given to a childhood/curriculum framework for young children in Ireland. The word Aistear is the Irish word for journey and was chosen because early childhood marks the beginning of children’s lifelong learning journey.

In our Aistear classes, the children play for almost an hour a day with an emphasis on active learning and oral language development. Curriculum subjects covered during Aistear include SESE, SPHE, oral language , reading ,writing, maths, art and drama. During Aistear time, the children are implementing their numeracy and literacy skills in a more meaningful way through the use of role play, games and real life situations.
