Our School Garden
In spring 2012 we started our school fruit and vegetable garden. Our garden consists of two raised beds at the back of the school. Each year 6th class pupils are responsible for preparing the beds, by weeding and digging the garden in preparation for planting.
Following the preparations, pupils from Juniors to Sixth Class are involved in planting seeds, bulbs and seedlings. The garden gives the children the opportunity to see first-hand how seeds are planted, how they grow into plants vegetables or fruits and how they are harvested when ready.
Each year a variety of plants are planted including peas, carrots, parsnips, onions, radishes and strawberries. Last year we had a great crop of carrots and parsnips and everyone took home the produce ranging in shapes and sizes for very small to standard size vegetables.
This year we have planted onions, strawberries, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, lettuce, carrots and parsnips. Hopefully we will have a good harvest this year so all will be able to enjoy some home grown organic vegetables. A couple of pumpkins have also been planted, which will hopefully be ready in harvest in time for decoration for Halloween.
