Vex IQ 2018
As you are aware, the children in 5th and 6th have been engaging with the Vex IQ Robotics programme for the past two years. This school year, the children have been designing, building and programming their robot since September, culminating in their participation at the Regional Finals of the Dell VEX Robotics competition on Tuesday 5th February, where we were delighted to be selected as recipients of a prestigious award on the day for “Outstanding ROBOT Skills”, a fine achievement for our small school.
We would like to thank the children for engaging with the project so enthusiastically again this year and also to acknowledge the hard work of class teacher Ms. Maria Butler and IT Co-ordinator Ms. Gene Maguire, who guided the children since September. A big thank you to Dell Mentors, Joe Correia and Fran Farrell for continuing to share their knowledge and expertise with us. We would also like to thank George O Leary for organising a day trip for the children to Goliath in Nenagh and Vivienne Farrell for organising a trip to the Modular plant in Shannon. Both visits gave the children a great insight into the practical use of robotics in day to day manufacturing.
Credit Union Quiz
Well done to all the children who recently represented our school in the annual Credit Union Table quiz held in the CBS last month. Despite putting in a fine performance on the night and answering some very challenging questions, we narrowly missed out on going forward to the next round. Our u11 team included Shay Óg Ó Chinnéide, Billy Hodgins, Charlie Kennedy and James McCarthy and our u13 team consisted of Adam Carroll,Hannah Dooley, Jack Quinlisk and Darragh O’Leary. Thank you to Ms. Butler and Ms. Hannigan for preparing the children so well before the event!
Our school handball teams took part in the Primary School’s Handball County finals held in Kilcolman last month. Thomas Gaynor represented us in the u11 singles, William Jones represented us in the u13 singles and Fearghal Doheny and Cormac Gaynor represented us in the u13 doubles. Well done boys on playing some terrific handball on the day!
Indoor Hurling Blitz
Ms. Lawlor is currently finalising plans for her Second class to travel to Cloughjordan for an Indoor Hurling Blitz, to be held in the Indoor Complex at MacDonagh Park on 12th March. The emphasis will be on participation and having fun and all children really enjoy this event, regardless of their level of skill. Here’s to an enjoyable day for all.
Pupils from Ms. Hannigans 4thclass, will travel to Ballymackey FC to take part in the FAI SPAR Primary 5 soccer competition in the coming weeks, more details to follow from Ms. Hannigan.
We extend the very best of luck to the children, in the opening round of this nationwide competition.
